The short answer

For a two-week journey that covers the north, the centre and the south, the most reliable windows are March to April and, for many routes, late October to early December. In spring, Hanoi is mild, central Vietnam is dry and warming up, and the south is still in its dry season. In late autumn, the north and south are at their best, while central Vietnam can be wet, so the route needs a little more care.

There is no single “perfect” month for the whole country, because Vietnam stretches more than 1,600 kilometres from north to south and has three distinct climates. The good news is that there is always somewhere in Vietnam with lovely weather. The trick is to shape the route around the season.

Why Vietnam’s weather is different in each region

Think of Vietnam as three climates in one country:

  • The north (Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay, Sapa) has four seasons: a hot, humid summer, a cool and often grey winter, and two pleasant shoulder seasons in between.

  • Central Vietnam (Hue, Hoi An, Da Nang) is warm and dry for most of the first half of the year, then has its rainy season in autumn, usually heaviest in October and November.

  • The south (Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta, Phu Quoc) is tropical all year, with a dry season from roughly December to April and a rainy season from May to November, when rain usually comes in short, heavy afternoon showers.

Two places have their own patterns: Da Lat, in the Central Highlands, stays cool all year thanks to its altitude, and the south-central coast around Nha Trang, Cam Ranh and Ninh Thuan is one of the driest parts of the country.

Tam Coc rice fields and river in Ninh Binh

Northern Vietnam: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay and Sapa

  • Best months: October to November, and March to April. Days are warm, evenings are comfortable, and the light over Ninh Binh’s rice fields and Ha Long Bay is at its softest.

  • December to February: cool and often misty in Hanoi, and cold in Sapa, where temperatures can drop close to freezing at night. Ha Long Bay can be hazy, but it is also quieter. Pack layers.

  • May to September: hot and humid, with heavy rain at times. Storms between July and September can occasionally change or cancel bay cruises, so flexibility matters.

If Ha Long Bay or Sapa is a priority, autumn and spring are the safest choices for clear views and calm water.

Central Vietnam: Hue, Hoi An and Da Nang

  • Best months: February to May, when the weather is dry and pleasantly warm. Hoi An’s lantern-lit Old Town and the beaches near Da Nang are at their most enjoyable.

  • June to August: hot and sunny, great for the beach but intense for long days of sightseeing in Hue.

  • September to December: the rainy season. October and November can bring heavy rain and, in some years, flooding in Hoi An’s Old Town. Travel is still possible, but keep plans flexible.

Green coastline and clear sea on Phu Quoc

Southern Vietnam: Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Phu Quoc

  • Best months: December to April, the dry season. Skies are clear, humidity is lower and the sea around Phu Quoc is usually calm, which is ideal for boat days and snorkelling.

  • May to November: the rainy season. Showers are often short and heavy in the afternoon, so city and Mekong days usually still work well. On Phu Quoc, the sea can be rougher, and boat trips are more often affected.

Da Lat and the south-central coast

Da Lat is cool all year, usually around 15–25°C by day. The driest, sunniest months are December to March. From May to October, afternoon rain is common, but mornings are often fine.

The coast around Nha Trang, Cam Ranh and Ninh Thuan, where Amanoi sits beside Nui Chua National Park, is dry for much of the year. Its main rainy period is usually October to December.

The best months for a two-week trip, at a glance

  • March–April: the best all-round window. The north is mild, the centre is dry, the south is dry, and Phu Quoc is still calm.

  • February (after Tet): a lovely time in the centre and south, with cooler days in the north. Note that Tet, the Lunar New Year, falls on 6 February in 2027, and many businesses close for several days around it.

  • Late October–early December: excellent in the north and south. Central Vietnam may be wet, so consider Da Lat or the south-central coast instead of Hoi An.

  • May–August: still very rewarding with the right route. Favour the north’s mountains and bays early in the season, central beaches, and Da Lat’s cool air.

Sample two-week route for spring

  1. Days 1–3: Hanoi. The Old Quarter, the French Quarter and the Temple of Literature.

  2. Days 4–5: Ninh Binh. Hoa Lu and a boat ride through Trang An.

  3. Day 6: Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay. An overnight cruise.

  4. Days 7–10: Hoi An and Hue. Heritage, food and the coast.

  5. Days 11–14: the south. Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, or a few slow days on Phu Quoc.

Our signature journeys follow the same thinking. The Hidden Kingdom is at its best in spring and autumn, The Hidden Island from November to April, and Da Lat & Amanoi works well for much of the year.

Tips for travelling in any season

  • Keep one flexible day. Weather can move a cruise or a boat trip, and a spare day keeps the journey relaxed.

  • Pack for more than one climate. A light jacket for Hanoi or Da Lat, linen for the south, and a compact umbrella for everywhere.

  • Book early for peak periods. Christmas, New Year, Tet and Easter fill the best hotels and cruises quickly.

FAQ

What is the best month to visit Vietnam?

For a north-to-south trip, March and April offer the most consistent weather across the country. If you are focusing on one region, the best month depends on where you go.

Is Vietnam good to visit in the rainy season?

Yes, with the right route. Rain in the south usually comes in short afternoon bursts, and Da Lat and the north’s mountains can still be beautiful. A private itinerary makes it easy to adjust each day.

When should I avoid Vietnam?

Avoid central Vietnam in October and November if you want guaranteed sunshine, and plan around Tet if you need everything open. Otherwise, there is a good route for every month.

How many days do I need in Vietnam?

Ten days are enough for two regions at a relaxed pace. Two weeks let you see the north, the centre and the south without rushing.
